Packing for Yoga Teacher Training in Bali: The Complete Checklist

Packing for a 3 to 4 week yoga teacher training is different from packing for a vacation. You need to be comfortable during 6 to 8 hours of daily practice, prepared for tropical weather, and practical about what your school provides versus what you need to bring.

Yoga Practice Essentials

  • Yoga clothes: 5 to 7 sets of comfortable, moisture-wicking practice wear. You will sweat through at least one set per day.
  • Yoga mat: Most schools provide mats, but bring your own if you have a favorite travel mat. Check with your school first.
  • Yoga towel: A non-slip towel for sweaty Vinyasa practice. Essential in Bali's humidity.
  • Notebook and pen: For journaling, taking notes during lectures, and recording teaching cues.

Bali Climate Essentials

  • Lightweight layers: Morning meditation sessions can be cool (especially in Ubud). A light long-sleeve top and yoga leggings are useful.
  • Rain jacket: Compact, packable, essential year-round for Bali's afternoon showers.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes are present, especially near rice paddies. DEET-based repellent or natural alternatives.
  • Sunscreen: SPF 30+ for outdoor practice and rest day activities.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: If you plan to swim on rest days.

Health and Recovery

  • Magnesium supplements: For muscle recovery. Your body will thank you.
  • Tiger balm or muscle balm: Available cheaply in Bali but bring some for day one.
  • Personal medications: Any prescriptions you take, plus basic travel first aid.
  • Probiotics: Helps adjust to new food and water.
  • Earplugs and eye mask: Essential for shared rooms and early bedtimes.

What to Leave Behind

Leave heavy books (you will get course materials), excessive electronics (minimize screen time), fancy clothes (you will live in yoga clothes), and large toiletries (available cheaply throughout Bali).

Bali-Specific Considerations

Bali's tropical climate adds some unique packing considerations that differ from training in a temperate location:

  • Quick-dry fabrics are essential. Cotton takes hours to dry in Bali's humidity. Synthetic or bamboo-blend yoga clothes dry overnight and resist mildew.
  • Bring a sarong. Useful for temple visits (required for covered legs), as a beach towel on rest days, and as a light blanket for Savasana in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Sandals with grip. Bali paths and stairs can be slippery when wet. Flip-flops work for flat ground, but a sandal with ankle support helps for walks in Ubud's hilly terrain.
  • Water bottle with filter. Tap water in Bali is not drinkable. A filtered bottle saves money and plastic compared to buying bottled water daily. Schools provide filtered water for refilling.

Luggage Strategy

Pack in a backpack rather than a suitcase if possible. Many Bali YTT venues have stairs, uneven paths, or raised platforms that make wheeled luggage impractical. A 50 to 65 liter backpack fits everything you need for 3 to 4 weeks. Most airlines flying to Bali allow 20 to 30kg checked luggage, which is more than enough for a YTT.

Digital and Study Supplies

  • Phone and charger: For photos, WhatsApp communication with your school, and alarm clock. Consider downloading meditation and anatomy apps before arrival in case WiFi is unreliable.
  • Small backpack or tote: For carrying your practice gear between your room and the shala. Rooms are sometimes a short walk from the practice space.
  • Highlighters and colored pens: Useful for marking up anatomy handouts and course materials during theory sessions.
  • Reusable water bottle: You will drink 2 to 3 liters daily in Bali's heat. All schools provide filtered water refill stations.

Toiletries and Personal Care

Bring travel sizes only for the first few days. Bali has well-stocked pharmacies and supermarkets where you can buy sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, and personal care products at reasonable prices. The exception is specialty items: specific skincare products, prescription medications, or brands you are loyal to. These are worth packing from home. Natural, eco-friendly toiletries are widely available in Ubud and Canggu, reflecting the health-conscious culture of both yoga hub areas. Look for shops like Bali Buda in Ubud and Alive Wholefoods in Canggu for natural products at affordable prices.
